Exeter’s Dry Ski Slope May Not Be Destroyed

Alpine Skiing In The Snow

Exeter City council may be reigning back on plans announced earlier this year to sell off land,  including the area where its dry ski slope is located, for housing.
'Exeter City council may be reigning back on plans announced earlier this year to sell off land,  including the area where its dry ski slope is located, for housing. The full council, which is 75% made up of Labour councillors, voted to sell a sports complex and the adjacent land where the ski slope is located to a housing developer in February, against the advice of its own officials And despite a petition against closing the slope signed by more than 2,600 people. The volunteer-run slope has operated more than 50 years and over the decades had taught tens of thousands of people to ski or board, with a particular focus on teaching children and disabled people.Although there was little change to Exeter Council’s make up in May, the labour group did elect a new leader, Phil Bialyk, who then became council leader. Now reports from local media say that Mr Bialyk is now reviewing the decision to sell land currently leased to the ski slope and a nearby golf driving range.Cllr Bialyk is quoted as saying he has been looking at a number of former decisions since becoming leader and talking to and listening to those involved, and concluded, “I would like to keep this space as it is, without proceeding with the redevelopment of the golf range and ski slope .” Any decision on the future of the site will need to go before elected members of the council. . Alpine Skiing In The Snow

Fresh snow has been reported accumulating on ski slopes at Cairngorm near Aviemore and at Glencoe ski area in the Scottish Highlands.
'Fresh snow has been reported accumulating on ski slopes at Cairngorm near Aviemore and at Glencoe ski area in the Scottish Highlands. It’s not natural snowfall though with summer temperatures in the mid to high teens Celsius in the region, but off-season testing of the two area’s SnowFactory all-weather snowmaking systems by engineers from manufacturer TechnoAlpin. The two centres, along with The Lecht, added the all-weather systems, which unlike conventional snowmaking systems can make snow in positive temperatures, last autumn. That includes making snow in summer if necessary.Cairngorm reported the TechnoAlpin engineers made a 100 tonne pile of snow. It’s now melting but the two areas say the snow is there, in a big pile, to play in should anyone wish to. . Ski Slope On New Danish Green Energy Power Plant Names 4th October as Opening Day

Alpine Skiing In The Snow

A new dry ski slope that runs down the roof of a giant waste-to-energy ‘green’ power plant near Copenhagen in Denmark has named October 4th 2019 as their target opening date.
'A new dry ski slope that runs down the roof of a giant waste-to-energy ‘green’ power plant near Copenhagen in Denmark has named October 4 th 2019 as their target opening date. The centre’s operators say that the Amager Bakke power plant, “has become part of the city” and that they plan a three-day party with sports activities, competitions, celebrations and concerts all with, “a focus on showing what the city’s new mountain sports mecca offers.” The delay in opening the slope, now named CopenHill , which has had worldwide publicity since it was first publicised as a concept more than seven years ago, and appeared to be largely complete more than six months ago had been puzzling observers. However it recently emerged in reports from Danish media that Danish law prevents any public meeting facility to be built above a boiler or similar facility and the slope’s operators have had to seek exemption from this rule.Test operation of the slope earlier this year have only happened on days when the power plant hasn’t been operating, according to the reports. In a statement issued today, CopenHill named the planned opening date, but hinted the slope might open sooner if permits were granted ahead of October. “If everything goes smoothly with tests and documentation is in place before 4 October, we will stage our official opening. When everything is in place we will open with a pre-opening phase with activities at the facility.” The statement went on to say that they expected the centre to start taking bookings for slopetime next month (August) but warned that, “In order for everyone to have a good experience, there will always be a limitation on the number of simultaneous skiers on the ski slope. It is recommended that you book your ski time in advance not just arrive at the slope in vain.” . 'A proposed adventures sports centre at Sheffield on the site of the city’s former dry slope appears to be making progress and now to be on a grander scale than originally announced envisaged when first announced nearly two years ago.Extreme Destinations have signed a 150 year operating lease with Sheffield City Council to create a world class sport and leisure destination incorporating a new ski slope, mountain biking trails, a hub building with shops, bars and restaurants as well as accommodation.Planned investment initially put at $30.5 million in 2017 has now grown to £40m, with the possibility it might eventually reach £60 million. The development should also create 400 new jobs and bring a million new visitors to the city each year. However whilst it had been hoped back in 2017 that the initial phases of the development could be open this year, 2019, it is now hoped that work could begin on the site in 2020 with no opening date available at this point.Having signed the lease, Extreme Destinations say they can now proceed to a full business plan and planning permission and move the project forward. In the meantime the council has secured £4.8m of Sheffield City Region Improvement Funding to build a new access road to the site.Sheffield Ski Village was one of the world’s largest dry ski slope centres until it was destroyed by an arson attack in 2012.Several of Britain’s Olympic team and World Champions first learned to ski or board and honed their skills there. The fires on the site have continued over the past seven years with another major fire this past  week. . 'A massive wedding with a reputed price tag of around $29m US (£23m) staged at an Indian ski resort is reported to have turned in to an environmental disaster in its aftermath. The wedding at the Auli ski area in the Indian Himalayas, a location known for its stunning natural beauty, was arranged by South Africa-based businessmen Ajay and Atul Gupta for their sons Suryakant, son of Ajay and Shashank, son of Atul, took place over five days in Auli from June 18th to 22nd.The problem came to light when it came to the clean up after the weddings, when it was found a reported 32,100kg of waste was left behind, including a large amount of human waste, as it is reported only six toilets were provided for the hundreds of workers and staff, and that the outflow for the other toilets had leaks.A lot of the waste has now been incinerated but this has led to a reported ‘toxic ash cloud’ hanging over the resort, and it has also been pointed out that the main area of incineration is next to the water course for one of the two main tributaries of the Ganges river.Local farmer are also claiming at least nine cattle have died after eating plastic and broken glass left behind. There had been legal challenges to the staging of the weddings before it happened, with some officials saying staging it would set a dangerous precedent, and the Gupta family had been asked to put down a deposit with local authorities of around $430,000 / £343,000 and banned from using plastic or glass products but from the waste left this does not appear to have been adhered to.It is yet to be determined whether the deposit will be repaid. The Gupta family is reported to have initially deposited the equivalent of £630 with the local municipality towards the clean-up operation but has also said it will pay the entire cost.Auli is one of India’s leading ski areas and a former host of the Asian Winter Games. It is popular year-round for the stunning beauty of its location and provides breath-taking views of several Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Kamet, Mana Parvat and Dunagiri.Following the widespread publicity of the wedding and its aftermath in Indian media the local municipality that includes Auli has set it will set up its first waste processing a recycling centre. . Inghams Add Japan As New Season Destination Choice

Alpine Skiing In The Snow

Leading ski holiday company Inghams has joined the small number of British companies offering ski holidays to Japan.
'Leading ski holiday company Inghams has joined the small number of British companies offering ski holidays to Japan.Inghams made the announcement as they launched their main 2019-20 ski holiday brochure. “Japan sits on many skiers’ bucket lists for its incredible snow and skiing possibilities, blended with fascinating ancient culture, wonderful sights and mouth-watering cuisine,” a company spokesperson enthused.Unusually, compared to existing British operators to the company, Inghams have opted to sidestep the most common Japanese destination for international skiers of Niseko on the northerly island of Hokkaido, and have instead gone for two of the country’s biggest and longest established ski areas on the largest island of Honshu, where capital Tokyo is located, a direct flight from the UK.The Hakuba Valley was a key location ion the 1998 Nagano Olympics and spans 10 diverse ski areas, all included in one lift pass (included in the price of an Inghams holiday). Inghams guests will be able to stay in the main resort of Happo-One, with easy bus links accessing the other resorts.Nozawa Onsen is a delightful resort, which started life as a hot spring village for resting travellers, with the first onsen (traditional Japanese bath house) constructed in the 16th century.Today, the onsens are still managed by the local people and are very much part of their culture.Skiing was introduced to Japan at Nozawa in the 1930s by pioneering Austrian skier Hannes Schneider from the Arlberg region.Accommodation in these resorts range from more Western in style to traditional Japanese-style hotels with communal onsens, offering a choice for all who seek convenience, comfort and an authentic, cultural stay. This forever-evolving, vibrant country offers plenty to discover beyond the ski runs: guests can lose themselves in fascinating experiences such as getting sucked into the bright lights of Tokyo or the tranquillity of the temples in Kyoto, paying their respects in Hiroshima, and spotting the Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani.Inghams’ ski holidays to Japan therefore also encompass an immersive city break.Combinations and durations are flexible, with the option to ski in either one of Inghams’ ski resorts and add on Kyoto, which was the Imperial Capital of Japan for over a thousand years. All trips start with at least one night in Tokyo.Inghams offers a five-night trip to Tokyo and Hakuba from £1,869 per person based on two sharing.Price includes return flights (direct from London Heathrow), coach transfers, accommodation with en-suite facilities, five breakfasts and a lift pass. The package is valid for travel departing on 14th December 2019, 29th February 2019, and 7th or 14th March 2019. .
